Tong Sui arrived at the research institute and pushed the door open.
The young researcher at the front desk was momentarily stunned, staring at him blankly for several seconds before reacting and standing up to block Tong Sui’s way.
“Who are you? You can’t just walk in here.”
Tong Sui was handsome and exuded a subtle scholarly aura, making him appear more like a researcher than a visitor.
He simply said, “I want to see the head of your institute.”
“Oh, um,” the young researcher blushed and said, “Wait a moment, I’ll go inform him.”
Tong Sui nodded, “Thank you.”
The young researcher hurried inside.
Tong Sui waited in the corridor for a moment before an older researcher came out.
His sharp gaze scrutinized Tong Sui from head to toe.
In a post-apocalyptic world, appearance was the best indicator of a person’s strength. Seeing Tong Sui’s clean appearance and relatively expensive clothing, the researcher considered him to be someone with some capability.
The older researcher’s expression softened slightly.
“What do you want with me?”
Tong Sui was also sizing him up.
This older researcher was one of the directors of the institute, Xie Guohong, responsible for a series of cruel research plans.
He had consistently rejected researching an antidote for zombies, instead opting to study modified biological creatures, attempting to control these mutations.
However, all his experiments had failed until he encountered Jiang Hua, who had turned into a zombie yet retained some consciousness.
Xie Guohong did more than just standard research; he employed inhumane methods to satisfy his twisted desires.
Tong Sui said, “I hope to join the research institute.”
Xie Guohong laughed, “Young man, I doubt you’ve even graduated from university. Our standards are not that low.”
“By your logic, does that mean that older researchers have higher scientific knowledge?”
Tong Sui replied, “You aren’t young either. Given how long the apocalypse has lasted, how come you still haven’t produced any useful results?”
Xie Guohong’s expression changed; he didn’t expect this seemingly harmless young man to be so sharp-tongued.
“Fine, don’t say I didn’t give you a chance.”
Xie Guohong turned to a younger researcher beside him and said, “Go get a test paper.”
Tong Sui followed Xie Guohong inside.
The air conditioning in the institute was set very low, and the harsh fluorescent lights on the white walls created a cold, technological atmosphere.
Various instruments and equipment were arranged throughout the lab, and researchers in cleanroom suits were conducting experiments.
Deeper inside were several large glass containers.
Inside, a few emaciated zombies were locked up, their teeth and nails all removed, and the dried blood caked around their bodies was nearly black.
The zombies heard their footsteps and instinctively lunged toward them, crashing heavily against the glass.
“Bam! Bam! Bam!!”
The glass was presumably made of a special material, unaffected by the zombies’ repeated collisions. Even as their wounds reopened and bled, they showed no signs of stopping.
Xie Guohong clicked his tongue impatiently; he raised his hand and pressed a button beside the glass container.
A jolt of electricity struck the zombies, causing them to convulse before collapsing onto the ground, motionless.
His practiced movements indicated that this was not the first time he had done such a thing.
Tong Sui frowned as he seemed to witness Jiang Hua’s suffering after becoming a zombie.
Xie Guohong withdrew his hand and walked forward, pushing open a door to a meeting room nearby.
He turned back and found Tong Sui still standing where he had been.
Assuming Tong Sui was frightened, he said, “If you can’t handle this, I advise you to leave quickly.”
Tong Sui clenched his fist by his side.
“Director Xie, your experiments on zombies seem less about research and more about satisfying your own twisted desires,” Tong Sui approached with cold eyes.
Xie Guohong felt an inexplicable pressure, but he pressed on, “What do you mean?”
“Under the guise of scientific research, you enjoy watching their suffering, don’t you?” Tong Sui accused.
Xie Guohong angrily retorted, “Nonsense.”
At that moment, the young researcher hurried over with a test paper, “Director, here you go.”
Xie Guohong snatched it from him.
He looked at Tong Sui coldly, saying, “If you want to join the institute, you need to score at least ninety points on this.”
The young researcher hesitated, “Director, isn’t ninety points a bit too harsh? It has always been sixty points to pass—”
“Shut up,” Xie Guohong snapped, “Go stand at the entrance.”
Xie Guohong placed the test paper on the table in the meeting room and glanced at his watch.
“You have one hour.”
Tong Sui glanced at the test questions and understood their difficulty. He picked up a pen and calmly replied, “That’s enough time.”
Xie Guohong dismissed him as someone simply putting on a brave front.
He was well aware of the paper’s difficulty. No matter how talented Tong Sui claimed to be, if he didn’t meet the standard, he would be kicked out immediately.
With his head down, Tong Sui wrote quickly.
Seconds turned into minutes, and Xie Guohong watched his swift pace with a sneer. Writing that fast, he surely must be guessing wildly.
In less than half an hour, Tong Sui stopped writing. He even submitted the test paper without checking it.
“I’m done.”
Xie Guohong huffed, “You still have time; don’t come crying about fairness if you submit early.”
Tong Sui replied, “No need.”
Xie Guohong disdainfully took the test paper, quickly scanning the answers. His expression shifted from contempt to surprise and finally to disbelief.
“How… did you get these answers?”
Every answer on the test was correct, and he had completed it in less than the allotted time.
